A senior dog named Doris was found on the streets by a police officer, who later on took her to the local animal shelter. Besides being old, she also had a bad case of arthritis. She wasn’t in the best state and the shelter workers didn’t think it would be worth spending time searching for a new home for her.
Within a few days, Doris made it to the euthanasia list. She clearly needed to be saved but for some reason, no one came to rescue her. When finally, the day came for her to be put to sleep, people rallied to save her. They shared her story on social thousands of times, and that’s how a woman named Nichole learned about her.
Nichole quickly got in contact with the shelter and she was told that the senior dog had about an hour left to live. She and her daughter rushed to save the dog. On their way, she even called back to make sure the dog had not been sent to the medical team or it would have been too late.
Knowing they might not make it on time, Nichole asked the staffers to put the dog on hold. They gave her 20 minutes more and that’s all she needed to salvage the dog’s life.
The staffers cautioned Nichole about the dog she wanted to adopt. They told her Doris was sick and she didn’t have a lot of days left to live. They were skeptical about letting her bring the dog home.
Despite all the things she learned, Nichole did not back out. She knew what to expect with a senior dog. It didn’t matter if they got to spend a year or a month; she just knew Doris didn’t deserve to die at the shelter.
Nichole and her daughter burst into tears the moment they had Doris at the back of their car. They were happy because they knew they made the best decision. When they stopped crying, that’s when the dog realized she was finally safe and free.
Doris was saved in the nick of time. She got a second chance at life, and she makes sure to enjoy every day she has left. Thanks to her new mom and sister, she’d be able to leave this world on her own terms.
