Staff members of the Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire were shocked when they entered their pet food storage shed one Sunday morning. They had just replenished their dog and cat food supply and were expecting to see a full pantry. But instead, $700 worth of food were gone.

The food wasn’t just meant for the animals that were under their care. The non-profit charity group also gave meals for the pets of elderly people and those that were struggling financially to feed their animals.

No one could believe that a person would be so heartless as to steal food from animals that are in dire need.

Overwhelming kindness

After the staff reported the matter to the police, the shelter staff made a press release and posted it on their Facebook page. They provided the details of what happened and asked the community’s help in apprehending the person who stole their supplies.

The shelter, who relies greatly on support from the community and business, also asked for donations. They asked for dry dog food, dry cat food, and dog treats to feed all the rescues in their facility.

Soon enough, the post was shared numerous times, and the response was overwhelming. People started arriving at their location bringing bags of food. There were even toddlers coming in with small bags in their tiny hands.

There were so many supplies that came in that the shelter decided to share them with other local animal welfare groups.

Positive consequence

Because there surely were a lot of people that came in to bring food, many of the rescue animals got adopted. The community banded together for these animals, and many of them have found better lives. And although the theft was a terrible thing to happen, it has brought strangers together to do a common good.

The authorities are still investigating the matter and have released surveillance footage of the man entering the facility.
