Volunteer workers of Northeast Animal Rescue in China often go on patrol to see if an animal needs their help. Often, they visit run-down neighborhoods, abandoned factories, public squalors, and tenement housings. These are the typical places where people usually abandon their unwanted pets, and that’s how rescue partners Fiona and Wil found Peony.

Peony was a gorgeous little puppy that lived in a shantytown. She was on her own when rescuers found her. Whether she was born a stray or was dumped by a family remained a mystery. But clearly, she didn’t deserve to live in such an awful place.

For a few weeks, the poor puppy slept in the cold pavement of an abandoned house, surrounded by rubbish. She had no direct access to food or water so she probably starved. And while she could go out to scavenge for something to eat, she was too afraid to step foot outside because adult strays were scattered around the area.

Fortunately enough, Peony’s rescue happened at the right time. She feared her rescuers at first because she wasn’t used to seeing and being around people. But thanks to them, she didn’t have to spend another night alone in her filthy little den.

The rescuers believed the puppy was abandoned by someone and that horrible experience caused her to be apprehensive of people. Her fear was apparent when Fiona tried to approach her. And even after accepting the food she devoured on, she kept her distance.

Fiona recognized the terror in the puppy’s eyes. But while she knew the little pup needed more time to get used to people, she decided it was time to get it to safety. And so, she gently grabbed the pup to secure it.

Peony screamed in fear. She thought her life was in danger. But when she recognized her rescuer’s gentle touch, she calmed down almost instantly.

All Peony needed was little time and she perceived that she was finally safe. She thrived under the care of Fiona and they have since become very good friends.
