Persephone Harrington, an independent animal rescuer, came across a Pitbull that lived under a shipping container. She knew the dog needed urgent medical attention.  She immediately called Hope For Paws, a not-for-profit rescue group in LA, and asked for help.

The group’s founder, Eldad Hagar, and volunteer rescuer, Loreta Frankonyte, met with Persephone right away. They followed her as she led the way to the shipping container, where the dog stayed. Upon seeing the animal, the rescuers knew they needed to bring it to CARES, a veterinary facility, as soon as possible.

The rescuers quickly went to work to secure the dog. Eldad distracted it with food while Loreta readied the gentle snare. Once the animal was close enough, they expertly looped it in with the gentle snare.

Eldad didn’t want to stress the dog any further so he took his time. He waited until the dog got comfortable with the snare. He and his rescue partner continued to give it food until they managed to build trust with it.

Once he felt the dog was ready, Eldad cautiously and patiently pulled it out from its hiding spot. He took great care in interacting with the dog because he didn’t know how it would react to a human, considering it spent nine years on its own. Additionally, he also knew it was in pain because it was hit by a truck, which caused it to lose an eye.

After securing the dog, Loreta replaced the gentle snare with a Lucky Leash. She and Eldad thanked Persephone and readied the female dog,  which they named Josephine, for their drive back to CARES. Along the way, they gave her the nickname, Pheenie, which she liked better.

Pheenie had various medical concerns, most of which were due to her old age. She wasn’t in her best state, but she felt relieved to be in a better place. She was grateful that Eldad and Loreta showed up to save her and provide her comfort.

LA Animal Rescue then committed to fostering Pheenie. For the next five months, they made sure the senior Pitbull experience love and happiness with her foster family. Laying by the fireplace one day, Pheenie passed away peacefully, not alone anymore but surrounded by those who loved and cared for her.
