Senior dogs at shelters don’t always have it easy, especially if they have spent their entire lives with a family. Because they have never really known anything else, the adjustment from being a household dog to becoming a shelter dog is difficult for them. They’d miss the love and attention they’d previously received and would often want to have these again.

Muneca, a blind 18-year-old Dachshund, was abandoned by her owners when they could no longer care for her. She felt lost and alone at the shelter. She was eager and ready to rekindle the previous connections she had. Muneca would leap into the arms of anyone who came close to her and clung to them, unwilling to let go.

Elaine Seamans, a longstanding volunteer who was visiting the shelter that day, provided Muneca with some human affection and connection. The volunteer gave the dog a deep hug, moved by the dog’s affection and want for attention. She knew what the poor dog was going through as a long-time volunteer working with canines.

A photographer named John Hwang was also at the shelter at the time. He then stopped by on his way to another photoshoot in Los Angeles with homeless individuals. Elaine asked if he wanted to photograph a different type of homelessness – one involving shelter pets.

John decided to shoot numerous photos of Elaine and Muneca after noticing their growing bond. John’s images were shared on the internet, raising awareness about the plight of homeless pets. Muneca was also able to get started on her rehoming journey as a result of it. A rescue group was captivated by Muneca’s story after seeing John’s photos.

Muneca was relocated to a foster home in San Diego after only two days in the shelter. She was examined by a veterinarian and housed with other dogs in a temporary loving home. The rescue group also assisted her in finding a new home. Hopefully, this sweet shelter dog gets new owners who will adore her for the rest of her life.
